About St. Joseph Medical Center
Since the doors opened on June 1, 1887 of Houston’s first hospital, St. Joseph Medical Center has offered compassionate healthcare to generations of Houstonians.
From providing Houston’s first emergency care facility, to Houston’s first OB department (delivering one in every three Houstonians), to Houston’s first teaching hospital, St. Joseph Medical Center has advanced patient care through technology, research and the experience of caring and dedicated physicians, nurses and staff.
St. Joseph Medical Center provides a full range of medical and surgical services, such as cardiology, cancer care, behavioral health, intensive/critical care, emergency care, neurosurgery, orthopedics and pediatrics.
St. Joseph Women’s Medical Center, Houston’s only full service women’s hospital attached to a general acute care hospital, provides women’s medical and surgical services, a family birthing center for moms and newborns, labor/delivery/recovery suites and a neonatal intensive care unit for premature or seriously ill newborns. The Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is staffed by the Small Wonders Team of specially trained doctors, nurses and staff who provide the smallest patients with the best chance at life.
Specialty services provided by St. Joseph include an advanced wound care center, behavioral medicine, blood conservation and management services, occupational medicine, sports medicine and rehabilitation, inpatient and outpatient diagnostic imaging, and Corporate Healthcare Connection, a partnership with Houston’s corporate businesses that provides expedited care to their employees.
St. Joseph Medical Center is proud to work with over 800 board certified physicians and employs over 1,500 medical professionals and staff. The hospital facility covers eight city blocks and is conveniently located on the edge of Houston’s downtown near the intersection of U.S. Highway 59 and Interstate 45.
- Emergency Medicine / Trauma Center
First responder to the both the City and Port of Houston, the 28-bed Level III Emergency Department is accessible via helicopter and EMS transport
- Heart Care
Comprehensive heart care, supported by board certied physicians, includes 64-slice CT imaging, cardiac catheterization, intravascular ultrasound and open heart surgery
- Women’s Services
Recognized by the March of Dimes, experienced staff and medical staff manage nearly 5,000 deliveries annually, while the Level II and III neonatal nursery provides care for 14.5% of those babies who were born prematurely or have other medical complications.* The Center for Women’s Breast Care is a comprehensive center for digital imaging and diagnostic services. Maternal/Fetal Program and gynecological surgery options are among other specialty women’s programs

Comprehensive surgical services, including 13 OR suites, 23 day surgery rooms, the latest generation da Vinci Robotic Surgical System for urology and gynecology, a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence and national recognition for orthopedic surgery
- Center for Behavioral Health
A 106-bed inpatient facility dedicated to behavioral health care for those 18 and Outpatient and Partial Hospitalization Programs are also available.
- The Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology at St. Joseph Medical Center
Comprehensive diabetes and nutrition management program is designed to provide education, information and treatment for those with diabetes
- Bariatric Surgery
Our Surgical Weight Loss Program guides and supports compliant, obese patients through a program that can result in significant weight loss
- Blood Conservation and Management
Program provides options for those who must be hospitalized or are in need of surgery but who elect not to use blood or blood products other than their own
