St. Joseph Medical Center, the oldest teaching hospital in Houston, has once again demonstrated its commitment to the training of future physicians who will assist in providing health care access for all. A new training program has been developed with the Texas A&M Health Science Center (HSC) College of Medicine, bringing to six the number of medical schools who have training affiliations at St. Joseph.
“We initiated the Texas A&M medical student training program in the middle of this month. It is our hope that this grows into a program the size of those we have with The University of Texas Health Science Center–Houston, UTMB-Galveston, Baylor College of Medicine, The Methodist Hospital, and the University of Tampico in Mexico,” said Phillip D. Robinson, CEO at St. Joseph Medical Center.
“Currently we have 74 trainees at our facility. With 792 licensed beds and 600 board certified physicians on staff, we certainly have the space and talent to accept more,” Robinson added. “Our medical staff has long been involved in teaching the next generation – it’s something that just comes naturally for them.”
David P. Huston, M.D., vice dean, professor and chief academic officer for the HSC-College of Medicine Houston campus, has been instrumental in working with St. Joseph to establish this training program.
“We are always grateful to have a willing institution with outstanding physicians who can share their wealth of medical knowledge with our trainees. We expect this affiliation will enhance our program, and we look forward to a great beginning with St. Joseph Medical Center,” Dr. Huston said.
The HSC-College of Medicine and St. Joseph Medical Center have affirmed their affiliation in order to sustain and promote the following: The advancement of medical service through comprehensive high quality patient care education. The education of medical and allied health professionals. The advancement of medical knowledge through investigation. Promotion of personal and community health through education.
“We look forward to a long, successful association with the Texas A&M Health Science Center,” said Robinson, who is a graduate of the Texas A&M University in College Station.
The HSC-College of Medicine is the second-fastest growing medical school in the United States and the fastest growing the state in 2009, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges, and is committed to training the next generation of compassionate and highly skilled physicians to advance the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease.
