Cancer Care
The Stehlin Cancer Research Laboratory at St. Joseph Medical Center is world-renowned for providing care and support for cancer patients and their families. We have highly skilled nurses assisting our physicians in the treatment of cancer. We hope you will count on us when you need any of the following services:

Cardiology
St. Joseph Medical Center was the first hospital in downtown Houston to care for the hearts of the community. We are proud to say we have provided this city with the first center for cardiovascular diseases and the first cardiac intensive care unit.
We know that every second counts when you suspect you are having a heart attack. Our convenient downtown location has saved many lives of the thousands of men and women living, working or visiting in downtown, uptown, midtown and neartown. Our interventional procedures include:
- Automatic implantable cardioverter defibrillators
- Bypass surgery
- Coronary balloon angioplasty
- Coronary stent placement
- Defibrillator implantation
- Diagnostic cardiac catheterization
- Electrophysiologic investigation

Intensive Care / Critical Care
When you are critically ill, you expect and will receive focused, monitored treatment and care from the professionals at St. Joseph Medical Center.
Critical post-surgical patients and those with substantial multiple diagnoses are cared for in our 24-bed Critical Care Unit. The Intermediate Care Unit has 36-beds for patients who are able to leave the CCU, but still need careful monitoring for their critical conditions.
Medical and Surgical Inpatient Units
St. Joseph Medical Center is proud to offer the community three unit, and a total of 101 beds for medical and surgical inpatient stays. These units also serve as the step-down units for post surgical cases.
Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery
The practice of plastic surgery includes restoring and reshaping the human form using both cosmetic and reconstructive procedures.
Cosmetic Surgery
The art of cosmetic surgery is all about reshaping a normal body structure to address a patient’s concerns about self-esteem or appearance. Our board-certified cosmetic surgical staff can assist patients with:
- Breast augmentation, reduction and lift (mastopexy)
- Brow lift
- Eyelid surgery (bleparolasty)
- Face lift (rhytidectomy)
- Liposuction
- Nose surgery (rhinoplasty)
- Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)
Reconstructive Surgery
Restoring function for a patient, whether due to developmental abnormalities, congenital defect, trauma, injury, tumor, or disease, is what reconstructive surgery is all about.
At St. Joseph Medical Center, we are highly trained to address your needs and work with your health insurance company to make sure you get the necessary procedures you need.
Some of these procedures include:
- Surgery of the breast, including biopsy, mastectomy and reconstruction
- Treatment for conditions of the hand including rheumatoid arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome
- Corrections to the face including cleft lip and palate deformity, and facial fractures as well as injury and disease
- Reconstructive graphs for skin growths, disease and trauma, and removal of skin cancers
- Complex wound healing and burn treatment

Orthopedics
The orthopedic staff at St. Joseph Medical Center specializes in sports injuries, spinal disorders, arthritis surgeries and pediatrics. As orthopedics focuses on disorders, diseases and injury of bones, joints and muscles, our physicians are equipped to treat sprains, dislocations and broken bones as well. They assist patients daily in dealing with decisions about joint replacement and chronic back pain.
When you meet with your physician, he or she may want to see any tests that were completed by another physician, and may ask for more. Typically blood work and x-rays are a part of making a proper diagnosis. Additional CT scans and MRI's can provide more details views of the injured areas.
Your orthopedist will recommend the best treatments for you, keeping in mind that their goal is your complete recovery. Your recovery may include a combination of the following:
- Counseling
- Casts
- Medication
- Physical therapy
- Rehabilitative therapy
- Splints
- Surgery

Surgical Services
The St. Joseph Pavilion serves as the entrance to not only our Intensive Care Unit, but to our Surgical Services as well. Nearly 15,000 surgeries and endoscopic procedures are performed in this state-of-the-art facility annually. We are proud to provide our community with:
- 16-fully equipped operating rooms
- 1 cysto room
- 20-bed post-anesthesia care unit (PACU)
- 24-bed day surgery unit
- 3 endoscopy suites
